An ayurvedic doctor course in India means the BAMS degree. It runs for 5.5 years, including a one-year internship, and admission needs NEET UG. After BAMS, students can take MD or MS in branches such as Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma, Shalya Tantra and Kaumarbhritya. Careers cover clinics, hospitals, government posts, pharma and research.
Introduction
At some point, most students wonder what a degree in Ayurveda really leads to. Is it only about herbs and massage? Not quite. It is a medical degree with clinical branches, hospital postings and postgraduate options.
Many parents and students still believe that an ayurvedic doctor course ends in one kind of job. That is not true. This guide covers the major Ayurveda specialisations, the Ayurveda courses open after BAMS and the Ayurveda career scope in 2026. It also shows how DJ Ayurveda in Modinagar, Ghaziabad, trains students for each path.
What Is the Ayurvedic Doctor Course in India?
It is called BAMS, short for Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. NCISM, the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine, sets its rules. The BAMS course at DJ Ayurveda follows the same pattern.

- Eligibility: Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, at least 50% marks, and age 17 by 31 December of the admission year
- Entrance exam: NEET UG
- Next step: MD or MS through AIAPGET

What Do Students Study in BAMS?
Each year adds a new layer. Year one covers Tridosha and Panchamahabhuta. Year two brings Rasashastra, Dravyaguna and pathology. Year three moves to Kayachikitsa, Panchakarma and Shalya. Year four adds Shalakya, Kaumarbhritya and Stri Roga. The final stretch has clinical practice, a dissertation and the internship. The college runs 14 departments, so students meet every branch early.
